Like everyone, their mother and Spotify, I will be making a list of the the favorite books I read this year. This Bookreads wrapped is a big deal for me so I gagged when i saw this:
For context, this is the first year I read more than 5 books (read 27) so I consider myself a reader now. Naturally, I wanted to talk about my 2024 book highlights here
Throne of Glass Series: Best Book Series I’ve Read
For the first time in my life, I genuinely wish I could go back and reread all 8 books for the first time. This series gave me something I didn’t even know I needed: a complex, unapologetic, and absolutely confident female protagonist in Celaena Sardothien. Across all books, it’s crystal clear that this is her story—a journey of growth and transformation that never loses sight of its purpose. The narrative knows exactly why Celaena does what she does, and it shows her evolution in the most masterful way.
Every trait of Celaena’s—her arrogance, stubbornness, bravery, and sass—is magnified and combined to create a one-of-a-kind character. She starts as an audacious young woman and evolves into a cunning, determined, and fierce queen. The development is so spectacular it’s hard to believe it’s the same person, yet it feels completely earned.
I just realized I literally made a full series review on my TikTok the second I finished the series so here you go 🤓
I always say that ACOTAR is a romance set in a fantasy world but Throne of Glass is a political epic set in a fantasy world.
Everyone talks about ACOTAR, but let me be clear: Throne of Glass is Sarah J. Maas’ magnum opus. HBO, if you’re listening—please buy the rights and make this series now.
Fav books of the series:
Queen of Shadows: Celaena pops off in every way as an arrogant assassin-turned-strategic queen (literally), while Manon and Abraxos *almost* steal the spotlight with their raw grit and unexpected heart.
Empire of Storms: It felt like just one long panic attack. The level of political schemes hit hard as Celaena goes through the hardest challenges I’ve seen any character in a book, ever, go through.
Kingdom of Ash: I was scared to read this book cause it meant I was gonna leave Terrasen but Sarah J Mass did not disappoint. Celaena’s journey concludes with a wild finale—more politics than romance, more grit than glory, and a fight for a future worth bleeding for.
PS: First time in my life that I do a tandem read of two books
Honorable Mention 🐣
Prisoner of Azkaban: I never read this as a kid (only saw the movie), and now I’m mad we were robbed of the full dynamic between James, Peter, Sirius, and Lupin. This book is the best in the series. Incredible, no notes.
Crown of Midnight: Book 2 of Throne of Glass Series and I audibly said, “Oh shit.” when the book finished. You have no clue where this story is going, and it’s brilliant.
Big Swiss: A wild lesbian story I loved, diving deep into parasocial relationships and how messy things get when the people involved actually meet.
Books to avoid 🫠
Intermezzo: I had a lot to say about this one to the point where I wrote a post about it.
Good Material: Hated it. The male protagonist does absolutely nothing, no growth, no depth, nada. The last 30 pages? Beautifully written, with the woman’s POV adding actual depth and complexity to the book. For most of the story, all you hear is a man ranting, but then the woman’s answer in the last 30 pages is cutthroat, honest, and relatable. It’s the only reason this book isn’t a 1-star.
